I used to like writing but never found the time and always got lazy. Here's a fan fiction, if you're looking for something to read because of the liar game hiatus then you'll probably be disappointed.

Also, I've put a link or two to kinda explain what the heck the chapter at the start of each chapter. Skip to 2:25 for the youtube video. That trick can be done with a normal coin toss action (flip off your thumb) by twisting your wrist as you flip the coin. With practice I can do it at school where it's impossible to tell with the naked eye (even while looking for it).

I know the first chapter is crap, but I needed to introduce a couple of characters and give context.

CHAPTER 1:
for information, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gAXbzQKo14&feature=related (2:25 onwards, the rest is crap).
And for some mathematical junk; http://www.codingthewheel.com/archives/the-coin-flip-a-fundamentally-unfair-proposition

Minato Street was one of the most dangerous streets in southern Tokyo. Shinichi Akiyama knew it was an inappropriate place for a man fresh out of prison like himself. Yakuza conflicts, street brawls, drug trades and illegal gambling all suggested re-arrestment if he misplaced a single footstep. He smiled at the thought, these scum were chicken fodder to him. This was a business expedition; he needed more than a mere 50 million yen to pry on large targets. As he pondered over which worthless victim to choose from the sea of fish in front of him, he noticed a major source of traffic; it was the entrance to a tall building with shattered windows and old brick walls. Most leaving the building held a depressed frown while those entering seemed elated. Akiyama knew it was an illegal casino, the perfect place, yet as he headed towards the entrance a ragged cardboard sign written with a red marker caught his eye. The sign read:

100,000 yen coin flips, 1:1.3 odds. IN YOUR FAVOUR!

“How interesting,” muttered Akiyama as he changed course toward the sign, “an obvious scam… but interesting.” The sign directed him around a corner and into a small block of apartments.

“Interested in the coin flips?” a voice from behind him. Akiyama twisted his neck to see a man in his early twenties. The man held the cardboard sign in his left hand while offering his right, Akiyama focused on his punk-long hair and triangular nose. “I’m Kaiji, why don’t we go upstairs?”

“Akiyama,” they shook hands, “seems it would be better that way.”

Kaiji’s apartment was small yet well furnished. New, yet unnecessary items lay scattered across the floor, the possessions inside the room were of a far higher value than the room itself. Either he had been mugging the people who had come up to his apartment or this coin flip scam was working. Of course Akiyama knew that the former was impossible, mugging someone in this area had a high chance of getting you killed by the victim’s ‘friends’. “I’m sorry about how messy this place is, try to make yourself at home.”

“I don’t think I’ll get too comfortable, we’re only flipping coins right?”

“Ah, right, getting right down to business. Have you got a coin on you?” Kaiji smiled, offering him a can of beer. Akiyama drew a 500 yen coin from his pocket, this man was using simple tricks; giving the victim ‘options’ to lull them into a false sense of security.

“So what’s all this about 1:1.3 odds?” said Akiyama as he handed Kaiji the coin.

“Simple, really, I will give you 130,000 yen if you win the coin flip and if I win you only have to give me 100,000 yen.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Well there are certain conditions that I’m essentially paying for you to agree to,” Kaiji took a sip of his beer, “all within reason of course.”

“Go on.”

“I will flip the coin and catch it on my palm. I will NOT turn it over. Also, we will do a minimum of 10 coin flips. Finally, and most importantly, a win for me will be if the coin lands with the same side face up as at the beginning of the flip.” Kaiji explained.

“What do you mean by the final condition? Say it more precisely.”

“You’re very cautious,” Kaiji grinned, “Before I flick a coin it rests on my thumb. The side that is facing upwards at this time is considered the winning side for me. In fact, why don’t we make it always heads for convenience?”

“Why does it matter?”

“It’s statistically more likely to land on that side.”

“Really?” Akiyama smiled, it was a pretty crummy trap but he could see it working. He decided to play dumb, “But a coin flip is a standard measurement of 50%.”

“If you don’t believe me why don’t you just take the bet and take my money?” Kaiji still held a warm smile.

“I think you’re going to cheat.”

“Oh?” the smile disappeared, “It’s your coin, how could I cheat?”

“I learnt a trick when I was at school.” Akiyama took the coin from Kaiji and placed it on his thumb. Heads side up. “I can’t do it well, but if I twist my wrist as I flick I can change the axis of rotation of the coin. That way it looks like it’s spinning while in reality, the same side is up the whole time... Heads.” Kaiji flinched as it landed. “It looks like you’ve made quite a profit from this trick, haven’t you? I could ruin your business…”

“That’s ridiculous.” Kaiji exclaimed.

“How about 50% to keep me silent?”

“Any idiot would notice my wrist twist like that.”

“If they’re not looking for it, it’s easy to conceal. Since you won't agree to a 50% cut on your profits, how about I put forward a couple of adjustments to the game to prevent you cheating then?” Akiyama said confidently, everything was going to plan.

“What conditions?”

“First, we up the ante to 1 million yen. Second, if I call ‘cheat’ and it lands such that you would have won, you pay me 10 million yen. All the other rules hold.”

“But even if I’m not cheating…”

“Of course that would be ridiculous, which is why if it lands such that I would have won, I pay you 5 million yen,” Akiyama pounced. Both of them thought silently for a moment.

“Do you even have 50 million on you?” but as Kaiji said the words, Akiyama drew 5 huge bundles of notes from his bag and chucked them on the floor.

“50 million is child’s play for me.” And then there was silence, a full minute of silence. Akiyama could see Kaiji’s brain working in overdrive. Kaiji had to take this offer, if he just flipped the coin normally, he would only lose 1.5 million yen, something he could regain from just two unsuspecting victims.

“Okay. But you cannot touch the coin or my body when I flip and you have to call ‘cheat’ before the peak of the toss.” Kaiji spoke in a sudden, sharp tone.

“That’s fine. Well then, let’s do this quickly,” Akiyama gave Kaiji the coin.

“You were right you know?” Kaiji chuckled, “Perfect in fact. I was surprised that you knew my exact trick. Since you’re fresh out of prison you wouldn’t have heard about me. I guess I underestimated you, Shinichi Akiyama. However, Mr Akiyama, you’re a man of principle with few contacts. If I were to abuse something that you neglected to mention in the rules, you’d be forced to give me one of those pretty bundles.”

“How do you know my full name?”

“I have contacts. But that’s the least of your troubles.” Kaiji flicked the coin in the air. But it barely spun. By the time it reached the peak it had only spun once.

“Oh I see.”

“Heads.” Kaiji showed him the coin. “Not going to call ‘cheat’?”

“Of course not, you’d just catch it lower, allowing it to spin over to tails.” Akiyama said in a defeated tone.

“You’re a quick one. Why don’t we skip the formalities and you can just hand over one of those bundles of cash?”

“I’d much rather you do all ten flips so I can watch for a mistake.”

END CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 2: for information, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_game

Akiyama scanned the scared and confused faces around him. Fear was understandable given the dark, depressing atmosphere of this abandoned warehouse. Kaiji had not made a mistake. In exchange for the 10 million yen, he had informed Akiyama of this ‘liar game’ and proposed to work as a team. Most of those around him were men in debt, looking for a way to break free of the vicious interest payments. On the other hand, some of those here looked calm and collected, like they thrived in this atmosphere. One man caught Akiyama’s eye. He was around twenty with medium-long, wavy black hair and a childish smile. To add to this image he was licking a lollipop. The man glanced over at Akiyama and offered him a second lollipop. However, before Akiyama had a chance to respond, a man wearing a mask appeared from on a platform above two meters above them.

“Hello ladies and gentlemen, it looks as if we’re going to have an exciting game tonight. We have the winner of the minority game who has neglected to tell us his real name, however he goes under the false name ‘L’.” the masked man pointed towards Akiyama’s person of interest. “And the twenty year old blond-haired man on my right is Shinichi Akiyama; the genius swindler that took down the giant multi-level marketing company, ‘NEARCO’.” Quick glances of astonishment and distrust went out toward Akiyama who had looked small and insignificant just moments before.

“Just get on with it Solario,” a second masked man walked into sight, “the game we will be playing today is called the pirate game. There are twenty-four of you here today, but you will be split into three groups of eight. The groups will not be competing with each other. There will be 800 million available to be won in each group, however we will be collecting 100 million from each of you at the end of this game.”

“I’ll explain the rules, Leronira,” said Solario, “each group will play four rounds where you are to decide how 200 million yen is to be split. The eight of you will be submit two votes each at the beginning of each round. The player with the most votes will be labelled ‘player A’. Likewise, the player with the second most votes, ‘player B’. And so on until we reach ‘player H’.”

“Also note that no player can be ‘player A’ in more than one round. That is, if Akiyama were to receive the most votes in the first two rounds, he would be demoted to player B in the second round.” Leronira interjected. “Furthermore, both votes CAN go to the same person and you CAN vote for yourself.”

“What happens if two people receive the same number of votes?” a voice from the crowd.

“Unless the tie is for ‘player A’ or ‘player B’, the positions will be decided by a coin flip.” Said Leronira, “We must explain the other rules before explaining the event of a tie for player A or B”.

“Here’s where it gets complicated,” Solario continued, “Player A will propose how much of the 200 million yen each player will receive. If four or more out of the eight players agree to this proposal (including ‘player A’ himself) then the money is split as proposed. However, if more than five or more players disagree to the proposal, then ‘player A’ will be eliminated from the round and will be unable to get any money in that round.”

“For simplicity’s sake, each player must receive a multiple of 1 million yen. Therefore player A can NOT offer player H something like 12.1 million yen.” Leronira continued his useful additions.

“If player A’s proposal is rejected, ‘player B’ will then put forward a proposal. He will need agreement from four out of the seven players remaining, otherwise his proposal is rejected. However, if player B is rejected and player C puts forward a proposal, then player C only needs three out of six remaining players to agree to his proposal.” Solario said

“Obviously, if it gets down to player G and player H, then player G can give all the money to himself because he only needs his own agreement for the proposal to be accepted.” Leronira said.

“As mentioned before, in the event of a tie for who will become player A, there will be a revote with just these two players as the options. However, both players will have to submit their proposals before this revote is to take place. The other players will be aware of these proposals before they vote.”

“Is player B forced to propose what he submitted before the revote?” It was the same man who had asked the other question before. Akiyama examined him closely, he was a short old man with a green and white patterned hat. Two women followed him around as if they idolised him. While others were busily processing this information, this man seemed to grasp the concept immediately.

“No, player B will be allowed to make another proposal if player A’s proposal is rejected.” Said Leronira, “However, since over half the players must vote for ‘player A’ in the first place, it is unlikely that player A’s proposal will be rejected.”

“Just to finish this up, in the event of a tie in the revote, player A will be decided by a coin flip.” Said Solario, “The players with the most money in each group will be given the option of progressing to the next game. If there are no more questions, we will proceed to split you up into three groups. All the best!”

END CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 3:

Yuji Fukunaga had drawn the short straw. He had been put into the group with both Akiyama and L. However, being a transvestite had its advantages; nobody expected much from a long haired blond in high heels. Furthermore, he had evaded the inquisitive old man and his followers along with that brown haired high-school student with malicious raven eyes. All he needed was one turn as player A, he would take almost 200 million yen in just one round for a 100 million yen profit. He held that thought as Solario announced to the group, “As you can see, you have each been given a tag with a number. The board above shows the names associated with these tags. Also, we will be selling beer and chips at the exit of the warehouse.”

The board read:
1. Kazuo Fujisawa (Nao’s teacher)
2. L
3. Denjiro Shawasaka (random Japanese name, male)
4. Shinichi Akiyama
5. Yuji Fukunaga
6. Nao Kanzaki
7. Akari Shonogo (random Japanese name, female)
8. Kenta Nagataka (substitute name for player 15)

Fukunaga only needed to convince four people to guarantee a profit for tonight’s game. He knew the names to avoid, L and Akiyama were obvious threats. Furthermore, Kenta Nagataka could have been considered second place in the minority rules game, collaborating with L. However, the other four seemed insecure, as if they would chase after any ray of hope. Many just stood around, almost afraid to move. However, others seemed more relaxed; Kazuo Fujisawa, L, Akiyama and Nagataka all moved toward the shop. Fukunaga grinned, he almost laughed aloud as he approached the remaining players.

“Hello, you guys look scared,” Fukunaga smiled, “Don’t worry though, I have a plan that will get us 200 million each. Let’s move somewhere a little more private though.”

There were plenty or private places in the warehouse. Wooden beams, cardboard boxes, staircases and small rooms all provided perfect, dark places that were out of sight. Shawasaka pointed toward a small room behind the staircases and said “I think I already know what you’re thinking, but we should move quickly before the other players notice.”

“You’re a quick fella,” Fukunaga said as the approached the room. They opened the door, a single slim window provided a tiny beam of light. “This place looks fine.”

“So… What’s this idea?” the voice of Nao Kanzaki was shaking and timid, “You said 200 million each, right?”

“Well, it will be 100 million profit each since we have to pay 100 million back.” Fukunaga smiled, “It’s quite simple really. Each round, all of us will vote for one player. With eight votes, that player will definitely become player A. Then all we need to do is split the money, 50 million each, and then we all say yes to the proposal.”

“Oh, then it’s impossible for us to lose!” Nao’s face lit up.

“Well, not quite, what if the other four come up with the same strategy?” Shawasaka’s words turned Nao’s face dark again.

“Well, then we should still get at least 100 million, and that’s assuming they all collaborate and trust each other. I doubt anyone would trust that Akiyama guy and L appears pretty devious as well despite the childish uptake of sugar.” Fukunaga reassured.

“How do we know we can trust each other,” Akari’s voice was judgemental, wary.

“Well, if player A doesn’t give 50 million to everyone, then their proposal will be rejected” Fukunaga said with a warm smile. They seemed convinced by this plan. They were such simpletons. “Now there’s a matter of who we will vote for. Obviously, since we can only be player A once, the person that becomes player A in the first round will be the least flexible. Since I suggested the idea and I’m confident that it will work. I will happily take this burden.”

“Well that’s….”

“I insist,” Fukunaga interjected. The others eyed each other warily.

“Okay, that’s fine,” they chorused.

“Okay we should go out of the room one by one so as to not raise suspicion. I’ll go out last. We should try to take different routes.” Fukunaga opened the door and one by one they left. He was pleased to note that many of the other players were still at the shop drinking beer. The exception was L, who was sitting cross-legged, digging into his replenished supplies of candy greedily. Fukunaga went to get a well deserved beer. These players were pathetic, too busy trying to enjoy themselves. Fukunaga had already won this game, the subsequent rounds would just be bonuses.

………….

“The voting for the player positions has been completed. We will not reveal who voted for who, however the number of votes each player received is presented on the board.” Solario announced. The board read:

A. Yuji Fukunaga – 8 votes
B. Nao Kanzaki – 5 votes
C. L - 2 votes
D. Shinichi Akiyama – 1 vote
E. Kazuo Fujisawa – 0 votes
F. Denjiro Shawasaka – 0 votes
G. Akari Shonogo – 0 votes
H. Kenta Nagataka – 0 votes

“Now we will hear Yuji Fukunaga’s proposal. You will then anonymously vote whether to reject or accept this proposal. Fukunaga, you cannot change your proposal after you announce it.” Solario continued.

“Oh, don’t worry I wouldn’t consider changing my proposal,” Fukunaga chuckled, “I propose; 10 million for player G, 1 million for player E, 1 million for player C and 188 million for myself. All other players get nothing.”

“WHAT?”

“Don’t get angry, this isn’t called the liar game for nothing.” Fukunaga continued, “But think about it logically. If two players are left, G will get 200 million and H will get nothing. Therefore if there were three players left, F would only have to offer H 1 million to get his vote. If we keep on going, E will only need to offer G 1 million to get his vote. Work backwards from there and my offer is perfectly reasonable. I even offered Akari a bonus 9 million because I feel bad for betraying her.”

“You have 10 minutes to consider your vote,” Solario announced. But nobody hesitated. Fukunaga grinned at the other players so quickly submitting to defeat. “Well, it looks like all the votes are in, so let’s not waste any time. The results are now displayed on the board.”

The board read:
Accepting the proposal: 1 vote
Rejecting the proposal: 7 votes

“WHAT?”

END CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 4:

Kazuo Fujisawa gazed upon the idiocy of this Fukunaga. How could he have thought that anyone would fall for such a simple trap? Both Shawasaka and Akari had informed him of the plan immediately. It was the perfect opportunity for him. All he needed was for player A to be eliminated and then all the power would lie in his three man alliance. It was simple, really, player B would need four votes, but player C would always reject player B’s proposal for the chance to make his own proposal. Therefore, if his whole alliance rejected the proposal they would move on to player C. And they could continue doing this until Fujisawa himself were to make a proposal. To maintain the alliance he would provide an even split. Shawasaka and Akari would trust him because this could not have been part of Fujisawa’s plan. Since the positions were randomised, Fujisawa only had a one in three chance of becoming the first to make a proposal. Betrayal would be unlikely. Therefore, neither Akari nor Shawasaka would accept a proposal of any less than 70 million, and who would offer such an obscene amount of money anyway?

“It is Nao Kanzaki’s turn to make a proposal” Solario announced.

“Um…. I was thinking that maybe we could split it evenly?” Nao Kanzaki’s voice and idealistic attitude was cute, “I propose that everyone gets an even share.”

“That’s roughly 27.57 million each,” Solario added, “You have ten minutes to vote.”

Again, the ten minute time limit seemed redundant. The last people to vote were L and Nagataka, and they took just two minutes. After the votes had been tallied, the board read:
Accepting the proposal: 3 votes
Rejecting the proposal: 4 votes

“The proposal has been rejected,” Solario announced again, “Now we will hear L’s proposal.”

The end was near, this was too easy, Fujisawa couldn’t help but smile. “Why are you smiling Fujisawa? Your alliance is too obvious to be a threat, so what is there to be happy about?” there was no mocking in L’s voice but it still made Fujisawa’s smile disappeared. “Maybe you thought that you could win this way,” L continued, “but you can’t, a blind man could see you, Shawasaka and Akari are in an alliance. You three voted without much thought on Nao’s proposal. 27.57 million isn’t something you can just throw away without a second glance. Fukunaga’s logic wasn’t completely flawed and you should have considered that I would do the same thing with a more reasonable amount of money. Shawasaska should have hesitated like Nagataka, unless he knew that others would reject my proposal when I offered him nothing. Furthermore, you guys all had zero votes, you all voted for Fukunaga planning for him to lose. Sadly, since Akiyama knows of your alliance, and he accepted 27.57 from Nao, he will accept my proposal.”

“Ohohoho. L, we are astonished by your logic, but you must state your proposal,” Solario said.

“I propose 150 million for myself, 25 million for Akiyama and 25 million for Nagataka.” Said L. With that proposal, everyone voted immediately. Three people accepted and three people rejected the proposal. This guaranteed L a profit for this game.

“What an exciting first round, we will take a twenty minute break before we begin the next round.” Solario concluded.

END CHAPTER 4

Just so you know, either solario or leronira implemented a filter that replaces s.olario with adam. It does get annoying, yes.

I've deleted the stupid filter. Typing in Solario should work now.

Yeah, I realised that the coinflip concept was a bit of a fail and tried to get away from it as quickly as possible Razz (I was considering having Akiyama win and conning Kaiji into joining the liar game, but I realised that the only ways Akiyama could win were retarded).

haha, didn't notice Razz

Anyway, I finished off the second chapter (which was basically just explaining the rules of the pirate game). Light and Harimoto have been introduced, but we won't see them do anything for a while. Now to study for end of years!!

EDIT: oh yeah, Xanatos won't like the transition between chapters 2 and 3 (there's a change in point of view). Really need to work on that Razz

Glass. D:

Like Xanatos said, it holds promise. Obviously it is not perfect yet, but when you fix it up a bit... It can be great. I'll keep checking for your updates, it seems as if it may get entertaining. I will love to see how you handle the characters and their interactions.

Sadly, after making you read through that I won't be able to write anything for atleast another month (exams+schoolies). I might rewrite chapter 1 if I think of something.

Wow, that's pretty good Lespar! I've actually been writing a deathnote and Liar Game cross over as well! Of course, It's on hold because I'm writing a book and another fanfiction at the moment, so I'm kinda full, but I have good ideas for it! Maybe I'll post what I have later....

Anyway, thanks for the interesting read!

You should post them up Razz

EDIT: okay, I couldn't bring myself to do any work and I thought of a plot progression for the round which seemed pretty neat, so I wrote some more. Turning into a bit of a wall of text, but I think the logic's pretty good if you can interpret it.
