Doubles Minigame

Welcome to another minigame. In this game, we'll be giving each of you 1000 yen. Isn't that awesome? Everyone gets 1000 yen! But... You also get locked in a room.

"How do I get out of the room, so I can bask in the awesomeness that is Nearco?" I hear you all cry. Well, every 24 hours, I'll unlock the room, and you can leave with whatever money you have. To do so, just PM me with a message titled "Quit".

"Wait? 1000 yen? That's a rather piddly sum. What can I do to increase it, mighty Nearco-sama?" you all say. Well, in the room, there is a button. When you press the button, it doubles the wealth of everyone still in the game. And it also inverts it of every player besides yourself. So, if you currently have 1000 yen, and someone presses their button, you now have a debt of 2000 yen. If another person presses their button, you now have 4000 yen profit. If you press your button, it grows to 8000 yen. To press your button, just PM me with a message titled "Button". Remember: You can only press your button once.

"So, how do I know who's pressed their button, oh Great and Mighty Nearco-sama?" You can ask around. But, we won't be telling you.

"Well, there's a monetary prize now. Did Forli bow to the power of the one true god, Nearco?" Yeah. No chess-related prizes this round. Future mini-games might have them though.

"OK, you sexy beast, Nearco. How do I play?" Just PM me to tell me you are playing. You have 48 hours.

"And how do we ask questions of the omniscient Nearco-sama?" You can PM them to me, ask me on MSN and the xat, or ask in this thread. I will put all rules questions here.

The game will last for 10 days. And no, you cannot.

Also, you can only press your button once. After that, it is inactive.

Any chance of a worked example?

For instance, with demonstrative players Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta?

If there's an odd number of people, and everybody presses the button, then everyone gets a profit of 2^X thousand yen, where X is the number of people. Let's all cooperate and get everyone a ton of money xD

If there are is an odd number of players, then one of them can make everyone suffer a debt by not pressing his/her button. Basically, s/he's being a dick. S/he will gain half of what s/he could have gained, but everyone else will get a debt. Any odd number of players not pressing their button will achieve this goal, where those that didn't press their button will profit.

If there are 10 players, then the best result is achieved by one player not pressing his/her button. But then that player will get a debt. If s/he presses his/her button, then everyone gains a debt.

For Dysania... There are 10 players in this worked example. P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6.

On the first day, P1, P2 and P3 press their buttons. Each player now has 8000 yen, but P4-6 all have that as a debt. P3 quits. He will get 8000 yen profit.
(P1: 8000, P2: 8000, P3: 8000, P4: -8000, P5: -8000, P6: -8000)

On the second day, P5 and P6 press their buttons, and P4 quits. Since P3 already quit, his account is not affected.
(P1: 32000, P2: 32000, P3: 8000, P4: -32000, P5: 32000, P6: 32000)

At this stage, everyone who is still in their box has already pressed their button, so I call the game. P4 is the only one to lose out in this game.

"Oh, great and mighty Nearco, who's mere presence is enough to make mountains bow, do we get told the amount of money we have during the game?"

Nope. All players will learn their total once the game is over.

But if an even number of players don't push the button then everyone who didn't push the button goes into debt while everyone that did makes money. Which means if someone doesn't push the button, they need to hope that an odd number of people didn't.

Yeah. So, you know need to convince the right number of people to do stuff. Throws stuff out of whack, doesn't it?

Ok since people have been complaining they dont understand nearco's wording (probably because mixing inverse and change signs) Im going to rewrite it so its easier to understand.


Everyone who joins starts with a free 1000yen (yay). If you press your button the value of everyone's yen will double and change signs (positive to negative, negative to positive), the only exception is your own which will double and not change signs.

B:1000
C:1000

(A presses

A:2000
B:-2000
C:-2000)

(B presses

A: -4000
B: -4000
C: 4000)

Thats how you play, pretty simple. You can only press your button once obviously

I will only announce how much each player has at the end of the game.

I must be really stupid. Why can't we just press the button an even number of times, and then let in this case Bad Player leave with a next to sufficient amount?

We could, but if I leave at the wrong time, or someone decides to be a jerk and push the button early so that I leave after it's been pressed an odd number of times... >.< I'd rather just leave with 1000 yen than risk leaving with a big debt.

Well, someone might already have pressed the button, but you do have a point.
